No one knows for sure why peppermint is associated with Christmas. It is believed that in 1670, a choirmaster at Cologne Cathedral handed out a candy shaped like a shepherd's staff to children at their living Nativity to keep them occupied. When the peppermint flavor was introduced 200 years later, candy canes became popular to hang on Christmas trees in the United States. Afterwards, other mint-flavored candies were introduced, and now mint is one of the flavors of Christmas.
